Hi Guys
T'was a sad day yesterday and truely the end of an ere as Dave Jowett of DJ Fairs 'organiser of the big ones', had his last show ever at Harrogate.
We only found out cos me and Dave (hubby not Jowett) decided to take a load of 'tatt' and booked a last minute table, and then towards the end of the show, Dave Jowett announced his departure over the tannoy and it was really nice that the room fell silent whilst he was speaking and then when he was finished everyone burst into raptious applause in appreciation of his dedication.
I have a lot of respect for Dave Jowett, he has served the collecting community for over 32 years, and we've been standing at his shows for around 15 years so have known him for a long time. Dave always made time for a bit of 'crack', and I for one will miss him... he is an all-round good guy and a true gentleman too.
Anyways, I was so glad to be there on what turned out to be his last day. He said he'll still be around at some of the shows as he intends to do a bit of dealing himself. He made his closing announcement from the office so hadn't heard the applause at the end, so he was really touched when I told him what happened after his speech... I'm sure I saw the glint of a tear in the corner of his eye.
So, if you get the Collector's Gazette then you'll know that Barry Potter has taken over the NEC (and/or Donnington Park... can't remember!!), and one of Dave's regular dealers, the guy from Lincoln who builds the display cabinets, has taken over Doncaster Race Course toy fair. and as for the Harrogate Show... there will be no more at the Great Yorkshire Show Ground because it's priced itself out of the market, and with declining numbers of show go'ers and rising costs of venues, its just not worth it at £10,000 a day!!!
All that apart, me and hubby Dave had a really good day yesterday, I'm so glad I went cos I wasn't feeling to clever and nearly didn't go, and we enjoyed it so much that it took my mind off feeling like cr@p! We sold a bit of VAM but mainly people bought Airfix and Britains, they were at give-away prices and the dealers bought most of it in the first hour, and by opening time all our sales were re-priced and relocated on other dealers stalls around the hall, but we didn't mind cos we wanted to get shot of it and the stock didn't owe us anything so it was all profit.
The best bargain of the day was to a guy and his son who we always see at Harrogate (even though we haven't had a stall there for about 2 years!), he got an SAS para that we'd split down into 3 lots, and at the end of the day we reduced a lot of the VAM... he bought the 3 lots for £1, £1, and £3!!! And to be honest, if we'd have listed it on ebay as one lot, we'd have been lucky to have got £4.99 and then take off eBay fees and then PayPal fees! And on the subject of 'fees', I wreckon I'm loosing about 20% off everything by the time you add both lots of fees together! They are ripping us off!
Anyway, that's enough of my 'blog' from yesterday's toy fair, back to the topic... the Todd family wishes Dave Jowett all the very best in his retirement and its been a pleasure working with him.
